Sermon: The Trouble with Transformation (Rev. Nicole Havelka)

Rev. Nicole Havelka, Southwest Regional Minister for the Michigan Conference UCC was our guest preacher today.

During our prayers:

  • We joined our Muslim sisters and brothers in making du'a for Deah Shaddy Barakat, his 21-year-old wife, Yusor Mohammad, and her sister, 19-year-old Razan Mohammad Abu-Salha. We invite you to join us in our supplication:

‘O Alaah, forgive and have mercy upon them, excuse them and pardon them, and make honorable their reception. Expand their entry, and cleanse them with water, snow, and ice, and purify them of sin as a white robe is purified of filth. Exchange their home for a better home, and their family for a better family, and their spouse for a better spouse. Admit them into the Garden, protect them from the punishment of the grave and the torment of the Fire.’

Sermon: God With Us Means Every Life Matters

Sermon from January 25, 2015 by Rev. Dr. Bill Lyons.

Excerpts from this sermon:

"The Holocaust was the systematic, bureaucratic, state-sponsored persecution and murder of" 16-20 million human beings by the Nazi regime and its collaborators. Holocaust is a word of Greek origin meaning “sacrifice by fire.” The Nazis, who came to power in Germany in January 1933, believed that Germans were “racially superior” and deemed “inferior,” anyone (the Jews, Blacks, political dissenters, Poles, Russians, Ukranians, Czechs, Roma, physically and mentally disabled, priests and religious, Jehovah's Witnesses, and gay and lesbian people) anyone who did not conform to their definition of the German racial community and classified them "an alien threat.

"Those who survived the death camps tell their stories and keep alive the memories of the victims so that "it will never happen again." Listen to the whole sermon to find out why Rev. Dr. Lyons wonders if it ever stopped.
