Today at 6:30 PM: Tuesday Friends Discussion Group

Hello everyone,  Last Tuesday, during Holy Week we met in person at the church and discussed the Bible lessons based on the south stained glass windows.  We looked at the colors and art work and symbols, using as our guide the booklet that is in our pews and also on our web site.  We plan on meeting again this Tuesday, April 22, 2025 at 6:30 PM to look at the windows on the north wall.  And maybe take a third week to look at the windows over the altar and at the rear of our sanctuary and the windows of the Hebrew Prophets in the narthex.  Come join us for some quiet reflections as the light comes streaming in.  Easter Blessings to you all.  Barb

Today at 6:30 PM: Tuesday Friends Discussion Group

Dear Friends, So we finished our discussion on Sarah McBride's book, "Tomorrow will be Different".  Such a informative, but also heart felt book about her life and for me very educational and an empathy builder.  Thank you to everyone who joined us.  We will take a couple of weeks off and then on April 15--Holy Week--we will do a two week discussion based on the Stained Glass windows of St. Johns.  This will be in person.    There is a booklet in the pews, "A Journey Through the Gospels" that we will use as a resource.  You can also find this document on the member page of our web site.  Go to member page, then resources and then historical records to find your own copy or borrow one from a church pew.  Sometimes we take artwork for granted--I hope our discussion will help us to appreciate this beautiful art and help us contemplate the gospel stories of Holy Week.  Everyone is welcome.

On May 3, from 7:00 to 9:00 PM there will be a discussion with Kristen DuMez and Nick Wolterstorff, sponsored by the Institute of Christian Studies and the Reformed Journal.  The topic is "Free to be faithful together with courage and conviction". This is a free event at Eastern Avenue Church, But you need tickets,  If you  would like to come to this meeting, let me know.  Another interesting event, that I think I will attend is "Red State Revival", an evening with Nadia Bolz-Weber, on Thursday, June 26, 2025 at 7:00- 8:45PM at Fountain Street Church--thanks for letting me know--Kay S.

Any questions--call or text me--616-438-1336.  Barb.

Today at 5:00 PM: Mobile Food Pantry

April Showers brings...the April 2, 2025, Feeding America West Michigan Mobile Food Pantry sponsored by St. John's UCC in partnership with Sudanese Grace Episcopal Church at 1500 Oswego NW, Grand Rapids, MI 49504.  Volunteers will gather at 5:00pm. distribution begins at 6:00 pm.   Last month, we distributed food to 120 families, 397 individuals, 138 children, 75 seniors, and 8 veterans.   A total of 29 volunteers lifted 4 pallets of watermelon into trunks of cars and divided up carrots and apples that arrived onsite in bulk. The menu included macaroni, yogurt, potatoes, milk and Pop Tarts.  The total weight of food delivered was 9,902 pounds.  Many hands make light work. Volunteers play a crucial role in the work to increase food access to our neighbors, we couldn't do this without you.  Students Joey Little and Faith Thompson were new to our volunteer crew. Thank you all so much! Richard Johnston delivered a carful of surplus food to UCOM.  Surplus Pop Tarts were delivered to the residents at Grandview Apartments and were much appreciated.  For more information about the Mobile Food Pantry, feel free to call Teresa Markoski at 616-690-4566 or contact at tmarkoski2004@yahoo.com.  Financial support is always welcome by donating on the church app or by writing a personal check to St. John's United Church of Christ at 1934 Bridge Street, Grand Rapids, MI, 49504.  Together, we serve.
