Wednesday, October 04, 2023: Mobile Food Pantry

The September Feeding America West Michigan Mobile Food Pantry sponsored by St. Johns in partnership with Sudanese Grace Episcopal Church moved 7,557 pounds of food and reached 108 households, 378 individuals, 68 seniors 160 children and 10 veterans.  A crew of 21 volunteers included two new recruits, Annabelle, niece of Brian Gordon and Annabelle Garrison. We were thankful not to run out of food and to have to opportunity to share surplus food with UCOM.  Rick Heath, Todd Krupp, Richard and Christine Johnson made a strong delivery team.  LeAnn Merrill used her superpowers organizing the storage closet and Izzy became our recycling manager. On October4, 2023 volunteers will gather at 5:00pm at 1550 Oswego NW, Grand Rapids MI, 49504. Distribution begins at 6:00pm.  For more information feel free to contact Teresa Markoski at 616-690-4566 or at tmarkoski2004@yahoo.co.  Finacial support is always welcome by using the church app or by writing a personal check to St. John's UCC,1934 Bridge Street NW, Grand Rapids, MI, 49504.  Thank you for making a difference in alleviating hunger, together we serve,

Neighbors in Need 2023

Neighbors in Need is the UCC’s annual offering to support ministries of justice and compassion through-out the United States, including the Council for American Indian Ministries (CAIM), justice and advocacy efforts, and direct service projects funded by the UCC’s Justice and Witness Ministries.

The Neighbors in Need offering, which we will receive on October 1, supports the UCC’s ministries of justice and compassion throughout the United States.Two-thirds of the offering is used by the UCC’s Justice and Witness Ministries to fund a wide array of local and national justice initiatives, advocacy efforts, and direct service projects. Through our national Justice and Local Church Ministries office, https://tinyurl.com/2bfytatb, you can find resources, news updates, and action alerts on a broad spectrum of justice issues. Working with members of the UCC Justice and Peace Action Network (a network of thousands of UCC justice and peace advocates), Justice and Witness continues its strong policy advocacy work on issues such as the federal budget, voting rights, immigration, health care, hate crimes, civil liberties, and environmental justice. Neighbors in Need also supports our American Indian neighbors in the UCC. One-third of the offering supports the UCC’s Council for American Indian Ministries (CAIM). Historically, forebears of the UCC established churches and worked with Lakota, Dakota, Nakota, Mandan, Hidatsa, Arickara, and Hocak in North and South Dakota,Wisconsin, and northern Nebraska.Today there are 20 UCC congregations on reservations and one urban, multi-tribal UCC congregation in Minneapolis, Minnesota. These churches and their pastors are supported by CAIM. CAIM is also an invaluable resource for more than 1,000 individuals from dozens of other tribes and nations who are members of other UCC congregations in the U.S.

You can make a donation to Neighbors in Need by giving online and selecting "Neighbors in Need" in the "To" selection or by designating your in-person donation at St. John's during the collection of offerings during Sunday worship.

Today at 7:30PM: Evening Prayer and “The Apostolic Fathers” discussion

St. John’s Church offers two opportunities each Wednesday evening via Zoom. All are welcome to attend either or both.

7:30pm – Evening Prayer. This is an opportunity to share joys and concerns, seek spiritual refreshment, pray together, and catch up with each other in the middle of the week. Outstanding sacred music is included.

8:00-9:00pm – Lecture and discussion of The Apostolic Fathers featuring Dr. Bart Ehrman. At each evening session we will listen to an audio lecture by Prof. Ehrman and then discuss the content. The Apostolic Fathers were Christian writers of the second century CE whom tradition connected with the original apostles of Jesus. Their writings are important for understanding the development of the early Church in the period immediately following the time of the New Testament. We anticipate a very interesting and informative lecture and discussion. There is no cost and no book is required.

Today at 6:30 PM: Girlfriends

Good morning Ladies

Hope you are having a very blessed week.  it seems a little cooler than normal this year already. But maybe it’s just me. I’m starting to see colors in some of the trees, a clear sign of changing seasons.

We will be finishing up with our current read, Accidental Saints by Nadia Bolz-Weber. I must say I have enjoyed her insight more than I thought I would. And found a few ideas I thought I would not mind seeing St. John’s do.  We will be reading the last 3 chapters of the book— starting with chapter 17 page 163 to the end of the book.

We will then be taking 3 weeks off before we start our new book.

The new book is: If The Church We’re Christian by Philip Gulley

We will be starting this book Oct.17th.

Girlfriends is open to anyone who would like to join us. We meet on Tuesday nights at 6:30p on zoom. You do not have to be a member of St.John’s church to join our group. We welcome all who enjoy reading and discussing books. If you are interested in joining girlfriends you can talk to Barb or myself(Diana) or call the St.John’s church office( 616-453-2497) and leave your information- that will be passed on to us.
We send out a new zoom link and information on where we are in the reading each week, so please make sure we have your email address.

Girlfriends would like:

  • prayer of healing to the Post family, on the passing of our dear friend and member Pete

  • prayers of healing to The Kritschgau on the passing of John’s sister.

  • prayers of healing to my brother in law

  • prayers for a great Welcome and meet on Saturday for Pastor Nathan and his family

  • prayers of Thanks for the great turn out for our fall kick off.

  • prayers of healing to my friend Pat on the passing of her brother.

  • prayers of healing and strength to Jack Belke

  • prayers of patience to all the worship center teachers. You are all awesome.

  • prayers of safe travel to the Bradford’s

  • prayer of welcome, love, grace and peace to all who enter our church.

we wish a Happy Birthday to:

  • Aaron Rossell

  • Elizabeth McInnis

  • Debra Foster

May the love of Christ watch over you this week. May you be showered with Love, Joy, Peace, Grace as we live in the light of our Lord
