Worship: Lenten Worship Gatherings

Meaningful worship gatherings are a hallmark of the spiritual season of Lent (Feb. 18 - Apr. 4, 2015) at St. John's United Church of Christ. Come and experience God's love, healing, and hope!

Ash Wednesday

Join us for prayers of repentance and Holy Communion on Wednesday, Feb. 18, at 7 p.m. This informal and intimate worship gathering happens in our Fellowship Hall. Mat 5:3 “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven" sets our theme as we begin a series of worship experiences taken from Jesus' 8 Keys for Well-being.

Couldn't make it? Worship at home using our online resources from the service, including the sermon and music links.

Sunday Mornings

Each Sunday morning in Lent we gather to hear God's Word for us, to pray, and to receive Jesus through bread and wine. Jesus' 8 Keys for well-being set the themes for worship:

Sunday, February 22, 10 a.m.
Mat 5:4 “Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted."

Sunday, March 1, 10 a.m.
Mat 5:5 “Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth."

Sunday, March 8, 10 a.m.
Mat 5:6 “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled. 10 “Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven."

Sunday, March 15, 10 a.m.
Mat 5:7 “Blessed are the merciful, for they will receive mercy."

Sunday, March 22, 10 a.m.
Mat 5:8 “Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God."

Sunday, March 29, 10 a.m. ~ Palm Sunday
Mat 5:9 "Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God."

Sunday, April 5,  10 a.m. ~ Easter ~ "The Other Beatitudes"

Services begin at 10 a.m. We hope to meet you there!

Palm Sunday

Children in particular enjoy the procession of the palms on Palm Sunday, March 29, 2015. Bells and tone chimes add to the festive occasion when we mark Jesus' the start of the last week of Jesus' earthly life. Our theme: Mat 5:8 “Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God."

"Living Last Supper"

Join us on Thursday, April 2, 7 p.m. as we meet Jesus' closest friends - the ones who shared a last supper with him.  Our Drama Ministry leads this worship experience. Communion and foot/hand washing are a part of the service.

Ecumenical Good Friday Worship

St. John's has a long tradition of joining our sisters and brothers from other West Side congregations for worship on Good Friday, April 3, 2015. Details will be announced as soon as they are received from the planning committee.

Easter Vigil 2010 010.jpg

Easter Vigil

Easter begins on Saturday night, April 4, 2015 at 8 p.m. with Scripture, song and prayer in the oldest worship rituals of the Christian faith.  The service begins outside with the kindling of new fire, so you will want to plan for the weather. We will celebrate the sacrament of baptism and communion and welcome new members to our congregation. At 7:30 p.m. - before the service - kids enjoy an Easter Egg hunt.  Refreshments and fellowship follow the Easter Vigil. Everyone is welcome to share in these celebrations of new life!
