Taize Prayer Service

Join us this Thursday, May 2, for our “National Day of Prayer—Taizé Service at 7:30 p.m., here at St. John’s.

The National Day of Prayer calls on all people of different faiths in the U.S. to pray for the nation and its leaders.

Prayer in the spirit of Taizé is meditative, where one invites God’s presence into one’s inmost being.  This ecumenical prayer style includes songs, Scripture, and an extended period of silence.

Join us for this special day of prayer!

Vitality Day April 20

St. John's will attend Vitality Day, sponsored by the Michigan Conference UCC, on Saturday, April 20.  As a registered congregation we can bring up to ten people for the cost of our congregational registration.  With Michael Piazza, co-director of the Center for Progressive Renewal and author of Liberating Hope as the featured speaker, this promises to be a premier day-long event for church growth and development.  We have openings for just seven people left.  You can attend for free and lunch is included.  If you would like to join our delegation, please contact us at office@stjohnsuccgr.org and we will be in touch with car pool and other information.  This event will be held at Edgewood United Church, UCC, 469 N. Hagadorn Rd., East Lansing, MI  48823

Reporting Ministry Touches Just Got Easier

St. John's has started counting ministry touches.  All of us do things that make a difference in the lives of people around us.  Those activities are ministry!  Help us count the ministry touches we do as a congregation by reporting your activities.  The on line form is easy and quick to use.

We are participating in the United Church of Christ 4/1 Earth project.  Report the hours you spend caring for the earth using our Ministry Touches form.

We are participating in the Michigan Conference 2x2 Campaign that counts volunteer hours and other kinds of support to community organizations by UCC members, friends  and churches.

Report all your ministry touches, 4/1 Earth activities, and 2x2 contributions in one easy-to-use location.  And thanks for being engaged in ministry!

Maundy Thursday Worship

Join the faith community at St. John's United Church of Christ on Maundy Thursday, March 28, at 7 p.m.  Maundy is the English form of the Latin word meaning commandment, Jesus’ new commandment to “love one another even as I have loved you” is the focus of Maundy Thursday. This love is demonstrated in Jesus’ example of selflessness as he washed the feet of those gathered for the Passover meal, and in the gift of Jesus received in Holy Communion. The theme of selflessness will be included in our worship gathering through an observance of foot/hand washing.  Whoever you are and wherever you are on life's journey, you are welcome at the Lord's Table at St John's.

Community Good Friday Worship

St. John's joins the other west-side congregations at the Basilica of St. Adalbert on Good Friday, March 29 at 7 p.m. for worship. The worship gathering will include wonderful choral, instrumental and congregational music and meditations from local pastors on Jesus' words spoken from the cross.  This worship service is a long-standing west side tradition in Grand Rapids.  The offering that night will be given to ACCESS of West Michigan.

Easter Vigil, Saturday March 30, 7 pm

Easter Vigil begins at 7 p.m. on Saturday, March 30, as we kindle new fire and enter the dark sanctuary with our candles to listen to Scripture and await the news of Jesus' resurrection.  This most ancient worship gathering includes the rite of Christian baptism, the reception of new members, and Holy Communion.  A reception for our new members follows the service.  Join us as we celebrate new life in Christ!

Prayer for Justice: Marriage Equality

On Tuesday, March 26, St. John's opens its doors to the community as we offer a Prayer for Justice in the spirit of Taize.  This prayer gathering includes songs and Scripture in the meditative glow of candles. The U. S. Supreme Court will hear arguments about marriage equality laws on Tuesday and Wednesday next week. The Justices' decision later this year will touch the lives of thousands of gay and lesbian people across our country.  Let us pray that God guides the court to a just decision that expands the right to marry to all couples regardless of gender.

Marching for Marriage Equality

A car pool caravan will leave St. John's United Church of Christ parking lot at 11:45 a.m. sharp on Saturday to go to the March for Marriage Equality downtown.  You can meet us there is you prefer.  The march begins at 69 South Division in Grand Rapids.  Bring your signs supporting marriage equality. We will need volunteers to carry our church banner.  The march steps off at 12:30 p.m. The time has come to march in the light of God for justice!
